Trigger points are focal areas of spasm within a muscle, commonly called knots. When a trigger point is pressed on it may cause local or referred pain. Referred pain is pain that is felt in a distant part of the body related to the area of the trigger point. A trigger point can in some cases cause shortening of the muscle. This can result in restricted range of motion with in the body part it is associated with. The neck for example.
Causes of trigger points may include: Trauma, injury, overuse, repetitive strain and alignment imbalances
Trigger point treatment is aimed at relieving muscular and myofascial pain without oral medications. The goal of Trigger point therapy is to release the "knot" allowing for more normal blood flow. This reduces the spasm and allows the area to begin healing. There is often immediate relief following each treatment session. Treatment is simple, minimally invasive and may require more than one session.
